Almug Tree

ALMUG TREE ăl’ mŭg (אַלְמֻגִּים, H523), called Algum in 2 Chronicles apparently by mistake. (See 1 Kings 10:11, 12; 2 Chron 2:8; 9:10, 11.)

Thought by some to be the red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus), an Indian wood which accepts a high polish. It is a red-colored, smooth and expensive-to-use wood. This tree does not grow, however, with the firs and cedars in Lebanon. The tree is prob. a cypress (2:8) (Cupressus sempervirens horizontalis).
