Adorn

ADORN (κοσμέω, G3175, to arrange, put in order, decorate). The word means “to beautify” and is used in Scripture in both a literal and a fig. sense. When used literally, it usually refers to women beautifying themselves so that they will be pleasing to their husbands (1 Pet 3:5). Isaiah 61:10 uses it fig. to describe the garments of salvation with which the child of God is clothed. Paul says that slaves are to live in such a way that they will adorn the doctrine of God (Titus 2:10). Revelation 21:2 compares the beauty of the Church to a bride adorned for her husband. Both Paul and Peter urge women not to be overly concerned about personal adornment, but to dress modestly and sensibly, and to be concerned about the beauty of good deeds (1 Tim 2:9; 1 Peter 3:5). The words of the apostles harmonize with the teaching of Scripture in general, that emphasis should be placed upon spiritual beauty rather than upon physical adornment.
