New English Translation (NET)
Version
1 Kings 12:20-13:34

20 When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. No one except the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the Davidic dynasty.[a]

21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he summoned 180,000 skilled warriors from all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin[b] to attack Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon. 22 But God told Shemaiah the prophet,[c] 23 “Say this to King Rehoboam son of Solomon of Judah, and to all Judah and Benjamin, as well as the rest of the people, 24 ‘This is what the Lord has said: “Do not attack and make war with your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you go home. Indeed this thing has happened because of me.”’” So they obeyed the Lord’s message. They went home in keeping with the Lord’s message.

Jeroboam Makes Golden Calves

25 [d] Jeroboam built up Shechem in the Ephraimite hill country and lived there. From there he went out and built up Penuel. 26 Jeroboam then thought to himself:[e] “Now the Davidic dynasty could regain the kingdom.[f] 27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem, their loyalty could shift to their former master,[g] King Rehoboam of Judah. They might kill me and return to King Rehoboam of Judah.” 28 After the king had consulted with his advisers,[h] he made two golden calves. Then he said to the people,[i] “It is too much trouble for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look, Israel, here are your gods who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 29 He put one in Bethel and the other in Dan. 30 This caused Israel to sin;[j] the people went to Bethel and Dan to worship the calves.[k]

31 He built temples[l] on the high places and appointed as priests common people who were not Levites. 32 Jeroboam inaugurated a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month,[m] like the festival celebrated in Judah.[n] On the altar in Bethel he offered sacrifices to the calves he had made.[o] In Bethel he also appointed priests for the high places he had made.

A Prophet from Judah Visits Bethel

33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month (a date he had arbitrarily chosen)[p] Jeroboam[q] offered sacrifices on the altar he had made in Bethel. He inaugurated a festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to offer sacrifices. 13 Just then[r] a prophet[s] arrived from Judah with[t] the Lord’s message for Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing near the altar ready to offer a sacrifice. He cried out against the altar with the Lord’s message, “O altar, altar! This is what the Lord has said, ‘Look, a son named Josiah will be born to the Davidic dynasty. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifices on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”[u] That day he had also given a sign, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has declared: The altar will split open and the ashes[v] on it will pour out.” When the king heard the prophet’s message that he had cried out against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam took his hand from the altar and pointed it[w] saying, “Seize him!” Then the hand that he had pointed at him stiffened up,[x] and he could not pull it back. Meanwhile the altar split open, and the ashes[y] poured from the altar in fulfillment of the sign the prophet had given with the Lord’s message. The king responded to[z] the prophet, “Seek the favor of[aa] the Lord your God and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored.” So the prophet sought the Lord’s favor and the king’s hand was restored as it was at first. The king then said to the prophet, “Come home with me and have something to eat, so that I may give you a gift.”[ab] But the prophet said to the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions,[ac] I would not go with you. I am not allowed to eat food or drink water in this place. For this is how I was commanded in the Lord’s message, ‘Eat no food. Drink no water. And do not return by the way you came.’” 10 So he started back on another road; he did not travel back on the same road he had taken to Bethel.

11 Now there was an old prophet living in Bethel. When his sons[ad] came home, they told him everything the prophet[ae] had done in Bethel that day. And they told their father all the words that he had spoken to the king.[af] 12 Their father asked them, “Which road did he take?” His sons showed him[ag] the road the prophet from Judah had taken. 13 He then told his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” When they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it 14 and took off after the prophet, whom he found sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, “Are you the prophet from Judah?” He answered, “Yes, I am.” 15 He then said to him, “Come home with me and eat something.” 16 But he replied, “I can’t go back with you.[ah] I am not allowed to eat food or to drink water with you in this place. 17 For an order came to me in the Lord’s message, ‘Eat no food. Drink no water there. And do not return by the way you came.’” 18 Then the old prophet[ai] said, “I too am a prophet like you. And an angel has told me in a message from the Lord, ‘Bring him back with you to your house so he can eat food and drink water.’” But he had lied to him.[aj] 19 So the prophet[ak] went back with him. He ate food in his house and he drank water.

20 While they were sitting at the table, the Lord’s message came to the old prophet who had brought him back. 21 So he cried out to the prophet[al] who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord has said, ‘You[am] have rebelled against the Lord’s instruction[an] and have not obeyed the command the Lord your God gave you. 22 You went back. You ate food. And you drank water in the place of which he had said to you, “Eat no food. Drink no water.” Therefore[ao] your corpse will not be buried in your ancestral tomb.’”[ap]

23 So this is what happened after he had eaten food and drunk water.[aq] The old prophet[ar] saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 So the prophet from Judah travelled on. Then a lion attacked him on the road and killed him.

There was his body lying on the road, with the donkey standing next to it, and the lion just standing there by the body. 25 Then some men came passing by and saw the body lying in the road with the lion standing next to the body. They went and reported what they had seen[as] in the city where the old prophet lived. 26 When the old prophet who had invited him to his house heard the news,[at] he said, “It is the prophet[au] who rebelled against the Lord.[av] The Lord delivered him over to the lion and it tore him up[aw] and killed him, in keeping with the Lord’s message that he had spoken to him.” 27 He told his sons, “Saddle my donkey.” So they saddled it. 28 He went and found the body lying in the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside it;[ax] the lion had neither eaten the body nor attacked the donkey. 29 The old prophet[ay] picked up the prophet’s[az] body, put it on the donkey, and brought it back. The old prophet then entered the city to mourn him and to bury him. 30 He put the body into his own tomb, and they[ba] mourned over him, saying, “Ah, my brother!” 31 After he buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the tomb where the prophet[bb] is buried; put my bones right beside his bones, 32 because the message that he announced as the Lord’s message against the altar in Bethel and against all the temples on the high places in the cities of the north[bc] will certainly be fulfilled.”

A Prophet Announces the End of Jeroboam’s Dynasty

33 After this happened, Jeroboam still did not change his evil ways;[bd] he continued to appoint common people[be] as priests at the high places. Anyone who wanted the job he consecrated as a priest.[bf] 34 This sin caused Jeroboam’s dynasty[bg] to come to an end and to be destroyed from the face of the earth.

Acts 9:26-43

Saul Returns to Jerusalem

26 When he arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to associate[a] with the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, because they did not believe[b] that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took[c] Saul,[d] brought[e] him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, that[f] the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly[g] in the name of Jesus. 28 So he was staying with them, associating openly with them[h] in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He was speaking and debating[i] with the Greek-speaking Jews,[j] but they were trying to kill him. 30 When the brothers found out about this, they brought him down to Caesarea[k] and sent him away to Tarsus.

31 Then[l] the church throughout Judea, Galilee,[m] and Samaria experienced[n] peace and thus was strengthened.[o] Living[p] in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, the church[q] increased in numbers.

Peter Heals Aeneas

32 Now[r] as Peter was traveling around from place to place,[s] he also came down to the saints who lived in Lydda.[t] 33 He found there a man named Aeneas who had been confined to a mattress for eight years because[u] he was paralyzed. 34 Peter[v] said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ[w] heals you. Get up and make your own bed!”[x] And immediately he got up. 35 All[y] those who lived in Lydda[z] and Sharon[aa] saw him, and they[ab] turned[ac] to the Lord.

Peter Raises Dorcas

36 Now in Joppa[ad] there was a disciple named Tabitha (which in translation means[ae] Dorcas).[af] She was continually doing good deeds and acts of charity.[ag] 37 At that time[ah] she became sick[ai] and died. When they had washed[aj] her body,[ak] they placed it in an upstairs room. 38 Because Lydda[al] was near Joppa, when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Come to us without delay.”[am] 39 So Peter got up and went with them, and[an] when he arrived[ao] they brought him to the upper room. All[ap] the widows stood beside him, crying and showing him[aq] the tunics[ar] and other clothing[as] Dorcas used to make[at] while she was with them. 40 But Peter sent them all outside,[au] knelt down,[av] and prayed. Turning[aw] to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.[ax] 41 He gave[ay] her his hand and helped her get up. Then he called[az] the saints and widows and presented her alive. 42 This became known throughout all[ba] Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.[bb] 43 So[bc] Peter[bd] stayed many days in Joppa with a man named[be] Simon, a tanner.[bf]

Psalm 132

Psalm 132[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

132 O Lord, for David’s sake remember
all his strenuous effort,[c]
and how he made a vow to the Lord,
and swore an oath to the Powerful One of Jacob.
He said,[d] “I will not enter my own home,[e]
or get into my bed.[f]
I will not allow my eyes to sleep,
or my eyelids to slumber,
until I find a place for the Lord,
a fine dwelling place[g] for the Powerful One of Jacob.”[h]
Look, we heard about it[i] in Ephrathah;[j]
we found it in the territory of Jaar.[k]
Let us go to his dwelling place.
Let us worship[l] before his footstool.
Ascend, O Lord, to your resting place,
you and the ark of your strength.
May your priests be clothed with integrity.[m]
May your loyal followers shout for joy.
10 For the sake of David, your servant,
do not reject your chosen king.[n]
11 The Lord made a reliable promise to David;[o]
he will not go back on his word.[p]
He said,[q] “I will place one of your descendants[r] on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and the rules I teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”
13 Certainly[s] the Lord has chosen Zion;
he decided to make it his home.[t]
14 He said,[u] “This will be my resting place forever;
I will live here, for I have chosen it.[v]
15 I will abundantly supply what she needs;[w]
I will give her poor all the food they need.[x]
16 I will protect her priests,[y]
and her godly people will shout exuberantly.[z]
17 There I will make David strong;[aa]
I have determined that my chosen king’s dynasty will continue.[ab]
18 I will humiliate his enemies,[ac]
and his crown will shine.”

Proverbs 17:6

Grandchildren[a] are like[b] a crown[c] to the elderly,
and the glory[d] of children is their parents.[e]
