Psalm 109-134

Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

My God, whom I praise,(A)
    do not remain silent,(B)
for people who are wicked and deceitful(C)
    have opened their mouths against me;
    they have spoken against me with lying tongues.(D)
With words of hatred(E) they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.(F)
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
    but I am a man of prayer.(G)
They repay me evil for good,(H)
    and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
    let an accuser(I) stand at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(J)
    and may his prayers condemn(K) him.
May his days be few;(L)
    may another take his place(M) of leadership.
May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.(N)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(O)
    may they be driven[a] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor(P) seize all he has;
    may strangers plunder(Q) the fruits of his labor.(R)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
    or take pity(S) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,(T)
    their names blotted out(U) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers(V) be remembered before the Lord;
    may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before(W) the Lord,
    that he may blot out their name(X) from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
    but hounded to death the poor
    and the needy(Y) and the brokenhearted.(Z)
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
    may it come back on him.(AA)
He found no pleasure in blessing—
    may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing(AB) as his garment;
    it entered into his body like water,(AC)
    into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped(AD) about him,
    like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord’s payment(AE) to my accusers,
    to those who speak evil(AF) of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord,
    help me for your name’s sake;(AG)
    out of the goodness of your love,(AH) deliver me.(AI)
22 For I am poor and needy,
    and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow;(AJ)
    I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give(AK) way from fasting;(AL)
    my body is thin and gaunt.(AM)
25 I am an object of scorn(AN) to my accusers;
    when they see me, they shake their heads.(AO)

26 Help me,(AP) Lord my God;
    save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(AQ) that it is your hand,
    that you, Lord, have done it.
28 While they curse,(AR) may you bless;
    may those who attack me be put to shame,
    but may your servant rejoice.(AS)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
    and wrapped in shame(AT) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
    in the great throng(AU) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(AV) of the needy,
    to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

Psalm 110

    “Rule(BB) in the midst of your enemies!”

    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,(BC)
    your young men will come to you
    like dew from the morning’s womb.[c](BD)

The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:(BE)
“You are a priest forever,(BF)
    in the order of Melchizedek.(BG)

The Lord is at your right hand[d];(BH)
    he will crush kings(BI) on the day of his wrath.(BJ)

    and crushing the rulers(BM) of the whole earth.
He will drink from a brook along the way,[e]
    and so he will lift his head high.(BN)

I will extol the Lord(BO) with all my heart(BP)
    in the council(BQ) of the upright and in the assembly.(BR)

Great are the works(BS) of the Lord;
    they are pondered by all(BT) who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
    and his righteousness endures(BU) forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and compassionate.(BV)
He provides food(BW) for those who fear him;(BX)
    he remembers his covenant(BY) forever.

He has shown his people the power of his works,(BZ)
    giving them the lands of other nations.(CA)
The works of his hands(CB) are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy.(CC)
They are established for ever(CD) and ever,
    enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
He provided redemption(CE) for his people;
    he ordained his covenant forever—
    holy and awesome(CF) is his name.

    all who follow his precepts have good understanding.(CI)
    To him belongs eternal praise.(CJ)

    their hearts are steadfast,(CW) trusting in the Lord.(CX)
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;(CY)
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.(CZ)
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,(DA)
    their righteousness endures(DB) forever;
    their horn[j] will be lifted(DC) high in honor.

10 The wicked will see(DD) and be vexed,
    they will gnash their teeth(DE) and waste away;(DF)
    the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.(DG)

Psalm 113

Let the name of the Lord be praised,(DJ)
    both now and forevermore.(DK)

    the name of the Lord is to be praised.

The Lord is exalted(DM) over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.(DN)
Who is like the Lord our God,(DO)
    the One who sits enthroned(DP) on high,(DQ)
who stoops down to look(DR)
    on the heavens and the earth?

He raises the poor(DS) from the dust
    and lifts the needy(DT) from the ash heap;
he seats them(DU) with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He settles the childless(DV) woman in her home
    as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.

Psalm 120

A song of ascents.

I call on the Lord(UQ) in my distress,(UR)
    and he answers me.
Save me, Lord,
    from lying lips(US)
    and from deceitful tongues.(UT)

What will he do to you,
    and what more besides,
    you deceitful tongue?
He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows,(UU)
    with burning coals of the broom bush.

Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek,
    that I live among the tents of Kedar!(UV)
Too long have I lived
    among those who hate peace.
I am for peace;
    but when I speak, they are for war.

Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(UW) and earth.(UX)

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches(UY) over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over(UZ) you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun(VA) will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm(VB)
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.(VC)

Psalm 122

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
    “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing
    in your gates, Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city
    that is closely compacted together.
That is where the tribes go up—
    the tribes of the Lord
to praise the name of the Lord
    according to the statute given to Israel.
There stand the thrones for judgment,
    the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
    “May those who love(VD) you be secure.
May there be peace(VE) within your walls
    and security within your citadels.(VF)
For the sake of my family and friends,
    I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your prosperity.(VG)

Psalm 123

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to you,
    to you who sit enthroned(VH) in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
    as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord(VI) our God,
    till he shows us his mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,
    for we have endured no end of contempt.
We have endured no end
    of ridicule from the arrogant,
    of contempt from the proud.

Psalm 124

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say(VJ)
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood(VK) would have engulfed us,
    the torrent(VL) would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord,
    who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the fowler’s snare;(VM)
the snare has been broken,(VN)
    and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name(VO) of the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(VP) and earth.

Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,(VQ)
    which cannot be shaken(VR) but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,(VS)
    so the Lord surrounds(VT) his people
    both now and forevermore.

The scepter(VU) of the wicked will not remain(VV)
    over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
    their hands to do evil.(VW)

Lord, do good(VX) to those who are good,
    to those who are upright in heart.(VY)
But those who turn(VZ) to crooked ways(WA)
    the Lord will banish(WB) with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.(WC)

Psalm 126

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored(WD) the fortunes of[v] Zion,

Then it was said among the nations,
    “The Lord has done great things(WG) for them.”
The Lord has done great things(WH) for us,
    and we are filled with joy.(WI)

Restore our fortunes,[x](WJ) Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.(WK)
Those who sow with tears(WL)
    will reap(WM) with songs of joy.(WN)
Those who go out weeping,(WO)
    carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
    carrying sheaves with them.

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds(WP) the house,
    the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches(WQ) over the city,
    the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
    and stay up late,
toiling for food(WR) to eat—
    for he grants sleep(WS) to[y] those he loves.(WT)

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward(WU) from him.
Like arrows(WV) in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.(WW)
They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents(WX) in court.(WY)

Psalm 128

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,(WZ)
    who walk in obedience to him.(XA)
You will eat the fruit of your labor;(XB)
    blessings and prosperity(XC) will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine(XD)
    within your house;
your children(XE) will be like olive shoots(XF)
    around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing(XG)
    for the man who fears the Lord.(XH)

May the Lord bless you from Zion;(XI)
    may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem(XJ)
    all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children—(XK)
    peace be on Israel.(XL)

Psalm 129

A song of ascents.

“They have greatly oppressed(XM) me from my youth,”(XN)
    let Israel say;(XO)
“they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
    but they have not gained the victory(XP) over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
    and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;(XQ)
    he has cut me free(XR) from the cords of the wicked.”(XS)

May all who hate Zion(XT)
    be turned back in shame.(XU)
May they be like grass on the roof,(XV)
    which withers(XW) before it can grow;
a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,(XX)
    nor one who gathers fill his arms.
May those who pass by not say to them,
    “The blessing of the Lord be on you;
    we bless you(XY) in the name of the Lord.”

Psalm 130

A song of ascents.

Out of the depths(XZ) I cry to you,(YA) Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice.(YB)
Let your ears be attentive(YC)
    to my cry for mercy.(YD)

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?(YE)
But with you there is forgiveness,(YF)
    so that we can, with reverence, serve you.(YG)

I wait for the Lord,(YH) my whole being waits,(YI)
    and in his word(YJ) I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
    more than watchmen(YK) wait for the morning,
    more than watchmen wait for the morning.(YL)

Israel, put your hope(YM) in the Lord,
    for with the Lord is unfailing love(YN)
    and with him is full redemption.(YO)
He himself will redeem(YP) Israel
    from all their sins.(YQ)

Psalm 131

A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud,(YR) Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;(YS)
I do not concern myself with great matters(YT)
    or things too wonderful for me.(YU)
But I have calmed and quieted myself,(YV)
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.(YW)

Israel, put your hope(YX) in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.(YY)

Psalm 132(YZ)

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
    and all his self-denial.(ZA)

He swore an oath to the Lord,
    he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(ZB)
“I will not enter my house(ZC)
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place(ZD) for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

We heard it in Ephrathah,(ZE)
    we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[z](ZF)
“Let us go to his dwelling place,(ZG)
    let us worship at his footstool,(ZH) saying,
‘Arise, Lord,(ZI) and come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your might.
May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(ZJ)
    may your faithful people(ZK) sing for joy.’”

10 For the sake of your servant David,
    do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(ZL)
    a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(ZM)
    I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(ZN)
    and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
    on your throne(ZO) for ever and ever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(ZP)
    he has desired it for his dwelling,(ZQ) saying,
14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever;(ZR)
    here I will sit enthroned,(ZS) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
    her poor I will satisfy with food.(ZT)
16 I will clothe her priests(ZU) with salvation,
    and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(ZV)

17 “Here I will make a horn[aa] grow(ZW) for David
    and set up a lamp(ZX) for my anointed one.(ZY)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(ZZ)
    but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(AAA)

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together(AAB) in unity!(AAC)

It is like precious oil poured on the head,(AAD)
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
    down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew(AAE) of Hermon(AAF)
    were falling on Mount Zion.(AAG)
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,(AAH)
    even life forevermore.(AAI)

Psalm 134

A song of ascents.

May the Lord bless you from Zion,(AAP)
    he who is the Maker of heaven(AAQ) and earth.
