4 Bóas gekk upp í borgarhliðið og settist þar. Þá bar svo við, að lausnarmaðurinn gekk fram hjá, sá er Bóas hafði talað um. Bóas sagði: "Kom þú og sestu hér, þú þarna!" Og hann sneri þangað og settist niður.
2 Þá tók hann tíu menn af öldungum borgarinnar og sagði: "Setjist hér!" Og þeir settust niður.
3 Síðan sagði hann við lausnarmanninn: "Akurland það, er Elímelek frændi okkar átti, hefir Naomí selt, sú sem heim er komin úr Móabslandi.
4 Og ég hugsaði, að ég skyldi láta þig vita það og segja: ,Kaup það nú í viðurvist þeirra, er hér eru, og í viðurvist öldunga fólks míns.` Ef þú vilt leysa, þá leystu. En ef þú vilt ekki leysa, þá segðu mér frá því, svo að ég viti það. Því að enginn er til, sem getur leyst, nema þú, og ég eftir þig." Hinn sagði: "Ég ætla að leysa."
5 Þá sagði Bóas: "Um leið og þú kaupir landið af Naomí, hefir þú og keypt Rut hina móabítísku, ekkju hins framliðna, til þess að reisa nafn hins framliðna á arfleifð hans."
6 Þá sagði lausnarmaðurinn: "Ég get ekki leyst það handa mér, því að þá kynni ég að spilla arfleifð minni. Leys þú handa þér það, sem ég átti að leysa, því að ég get ekki leyst það."
7 Það var fyrrum siður í Ísrael við endurlausn og skipti, er menn vildu staðfesta allar gjörðir, að annar tók af sér skóinn og fékk hinum. Þetta var vottfesting í Ísrael.
8 Þá sagði lausnarmaðurinn við Bóas: "Kaup þú það handa þér!" og tók af sér skóinn.
9 Bóas sagði við öldungana og allt fólkið: "Þér eruð í dag vottar að því, að ég hefi keypt af Naomí allt það, sem Elímelek átti, svo og allt það, sem þeir Kiljón og Mahlón áttu.
10 Einnig hefi ég keypt Rut hina móabítísku, ekkju Mahlóns, mér að konu, til þess að reisa nafn hins framliðna á arfleifð hans, svo að nafn hins framliðna upprætist eigi meðal bræðra hans og úr borgarhliði hans. Þér eruð vottar þess í dag."
11 Þá sagði allt fólkið, sem var í hliðinu, og öldungarnir: "Vér erum vottar að því. Drottinn gjöri konuna, sem í hús þitt kemur, slíka sem þær voru Rakel og Lea, er báðar reistu Ísraels hús. Veitist þér vald í Efrata og verðir þú frægur í Betlehem.
12 Og verði hús þitt sem hús Peres, sem Tamar fæddi Júda, fyrir afsprengi það, sem Drottinn gefur þér við þessari ungu konu."
13 Síðan gekk Bóas að eiga Rut, og hún varð kona hans. Og hann gekk inn til hennar, og Drottinn veitti henni getnað, og ól hún son.
14 Þá sögðu konurnar við Naomí: "Lofaður sé Drottinn, sem eigi hefir látið þig bresta lausnarmann í dag, svo að nafn hans mun nefnt verða í Ísrael.
15 Hann mun verða huggun þín og ellistoð, því að tengdadóttir þín, sem elskar þig, hefir alið hann, hún, sem er þér betri en sjö synir."
16 Naomí tók barnið og lagði það á skaut sér og varð fóstra þess.
17 Og grannkonurnar gáfu honum nafn og sögðu: "Naomí er fæddur sonur!" og nefndu hann Óbeð. Hann var faðir Ísaí, föður Davíðs.
18 Þetta er ættartala Peres: Peres gat Hesron,
19 og Hesron gat Ram, og Ram gat Ammínadab,
20 og Ammínadab gat Nakson, og Nakson gat Salmón,
21 og Salmón gat Bóas, og Bóas gat Óbeð,

Boaz Marries Ruth
4 Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate(A) and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer[a](B) he had mentioned(C) came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
2 Boaz took ten of the elders(D) of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.(E) 3 Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.(F) 4 I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you[b] will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you,(G) and I am next in line.”
“I will redeem it,” he said.
5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite,(H) the[c] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.”(I)
6 At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem(J) it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”(K)
7 (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption(L) and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal(M) and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions(N) in Israel.)(O)
8 So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.(P)
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses(Q) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,(R) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,(S) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.(T) Today you are witnesses!(U)”
11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate(V) said, “We are witnesses.(W) May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah,(X) who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah(Y) and be famous in Bethlehem.(Z) 12 Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez,(AA) whom Tamar(AB) bore to Judah.”
Naomi Gains a Son
13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive,(AC) and she gave birth to a son.(AD) 14 The women(AE) said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord,(AF) who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer.(AG) May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law,(AH) who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons,(AI) has given him birth.”
16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse,(AJ) the father of David.(AK)
