19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them(A) by my Father in heaven.

24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(A)

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(A) so that you might go and bear fruit(B)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(C)

23 In that day(A) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(B) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(C) and your joy will be complete.(D)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(E) a time is coming(F) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(G) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(H) and have believed that I came from God.(I) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(J)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(K) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(L) that you came from God.”(M)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(N) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(O) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(P) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(Q)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(R) In this world you will have trouble.(S) But take heart! I have overcome(T) the world.”

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(A) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(B) But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(C) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded(D) and unstable(E) in all they do.

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(F) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(G) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(H) and withers(I) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(J) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(K) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(L) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(M)

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(N) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(O) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(P)

16 Don’t be deceived,(Q) my dear brothers and sisters.(R) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(S) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(T) who does not change(U) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(V) through the word of truth,(W) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(X) of all he created.

Listening and Doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters,(Y) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(Z) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AA) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AB) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AC) which can save you.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AD) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AE) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AF)

26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AG) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AH) orphans and widows(AI) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AJ)

14 This is the confidence(A) we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.(B) 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know(C) that we have what we asked of him.(D)

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.(E) I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.(F) I am not saying that you should pray about that.(G) 17 All wrongdoing is sin,(H) and there is sin that does not lead to death.(I)

18 We know that anyone born of God(J) does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one(K) cannot harm them.(L) 19 We know that we are children of God,(M) and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(N) 20 We know also that the Son of God has come(O) and has given us understanding,(P) so that we may know him who is true.(Q) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.(R)

21 Dear children,(S) keep yourselves from idols.(T)
