Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death

(Mark 8.31—9.1; Luke 9.22-27)

²¹ From then on, Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “I must go to Jerusalem. There the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make me suffer terribly. I will be killed, but three days later I will rise to life.”

²³ who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All of this made the disciples very sad.

¹⁹ and then they will hand him over to foreigners^[a] who will make fun of him. They will beat him and nail him to a cross. But on the third day he will rise from death.

Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death

³¹ Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “The nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make the Son of Man suffer terribly. He will be rejected and killed, but three days later he will rise to life.”

³³ We are now on our way to Jerusalem where the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses. They will sentence him to death and hand him over to foreigners,^[a]

We are now on our way to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will happen there. ³² He will be handed over to foreigners,^[a] who will make fun of him, mistreat him, and spit on him. ³³ They will beat him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life.
