Judges 13:7-9
New English Translation
7 He said to me, ‘Look, you will conceive and have a son.[a] So now, do not drink wine or beer and do not eat any food that will make you ritually unclean.[b] For the child will be dedicated[c] to God from birth till the day he dies.’”
8 Manoah prayed to the Lord,[d] “Please, Lord, allow the man sent from God[e] to visit[f] us again, so he can teach[g] us how we should raise[h] the child who will be born.” 9 God answered Manoah’s prayer.[i] God’s angel visited[j] the woman again while she was sitting in the field. But her husband Manoah was not with her.

- Judges 13:7 tn See the note on the word “son” in 13:5, where this same statement occurs.
- Judges 13:7 tn Heb “eat anything unclean.” Certain foods were regarded as ritually “unclean” (see Lev 11). Eating such food made one ritually “contaminated.”
- Judges 13:7 tn Traditionally “a Nazirite.”
- Judges 13:8 tn The Hebrew text adds “and said.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- Judges 13:8 tn Heb “the man of God.”
- Judges 13:8 tn Heb “come to.”
- Judges 13:8 tc The LXX has “enlighten,” understanding the Hebrew to read וִיאִירֵנוּ (viʾirenu, “to give light”) rather than the reading of the MT, וְיוֹרֵנוּ (veyorenu, “to teach”).
- Judges 13:8 tn Heb “what we should do for.”
- Judges 13:9 tn Heb “God listened to the voice of Manoah.”
