10 The Lord threw the Amorites[a] into a panic right in front of the army[b] of Israel, which then slaughtered many of them at Gibeon. The Israeli army[c] chased them along the road that goes up to Beth-horon, striking them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 While they were fleeing in front of Israel and descending the slope of Beth-horon, the Lord rained down huge hailstones on them as far as Azekah, and they died. More died because of the hailstones than were killed by the Israelis in battle.[d] 12 Later that day, Joshua spoke to the Lord while the Lord was delivering the Amorites to the Israelis. This is what he said in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, be still over Gibeon!
    Moon, stand in place[e] in the Aijalon Valley!”

10 The Lord threw them into confusion(A) before Israel,(B) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(C) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(D) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(E) and Makkedah.(F) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(G) down on them,(H) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.

12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(I) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
    and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(J)
