3 Moses had already given the two-and-a-half tribes their land east of the Jordan River. But the tribe of Levi was not given any ·land [inheritance] like the others. 4 The sons of Joseph had ·divided into [L become] two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. The tribe of Levi was not given any ·land [inheritance]. It was given only some towns in which to live and pastures for its ·animals [L cattle and property].

3 Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(A) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(B) 4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(C) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(D)
