“Now this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster(A) on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women,(B) the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?(C) Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made,(D) burning incense(E) to other gods in Egypt,(F) where you have come to live?(G) You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse[a] and an object of reproach(H) among all the nations on earth. Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(I) and by the kings(J) and queens(K) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(L) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(M) 10 To this day they have not humbled(N) themselves or shown reverence,(O) nor have they followed my law(P) and the decrees(Q) I set before you and your ancestors.(R)

11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(S) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(T) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(U) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(V) they will die by sword or famine.(W) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(X) 13 I will punish(Y) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(Z) famine and plague,(AA) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(AB)

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(AC) were burning incense(AD) to other gods, along with all the women(AE) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(AF) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(AG) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(AH) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(AI) We will burn incense(AJ) to the Queen of Heaven(AK) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(AL) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(AM) At that time we had plenty of food(AN) and were well off and suffered no harm.(AO) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(AP) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(AQ)

19 The women added, “When we burned incense(AR) to the Queen of Heaven(AS) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(AT) know that we were making cakes(AU) impressed with her image(AV) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”

  1. Jeremiah 44:8 That is, your name will be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, others will see that you are cursed; also in verse 12; similarly in verse 22.

Therefore now thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;

In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut yourselves off, and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.

12 And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.

13 For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:

14 So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.

15 Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,

16 As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee.

17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?

25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(A) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(B)

“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(C)
