3 You ask and don’t have because you ask with evil intentions, to waste it on your own cravings.
4 You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world's friend becomes God's enemy. 5 Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn’t God long for our faithfulness in[a] the life he has given to us?[b]

3 When you ask, you do not receive,(A) because you ask with wrong motives,(B) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous(C) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(D) means enmity against God?(E) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(F) 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(G)
