16 (A)It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for (B)by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did (C)not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For God said, “Lest the people (D)change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 But God (E)led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.

Crossing the Sea
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(B) 18 So God led(C) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(D)
