¹³ they went out from their camp to battle. Then the men with Judas blew their trumpets^{(A) 14} and engaged in battle. The nations were crushed and fled into the plain, ¹⁵ and all those in the rear fell by the sword. They pursued them to Gazara and to the plains of Idumea and to Azotus and Jamnia, and three thousand of them fell.^{(B) 16} Then Judas and his force turned back from pursuing them,

¹⁵ He gave his troops the watchword, “God’s victory,” and with a picked force of the bravest young men, he attacked the king’s pavilion at night and killed as many as two thousand men in the camp. He stabbed^[a] the leading elephant and its rider.^(A)

⁹ Encouraging them from the Law and the Prophets and reminding them also of the struggles they had won, he made them the more eager.^(A)
