1 Öldungurinn heilsar elskuðum Gajusi, sem ég ann í sannleika.
2 Ég bið þess, minn elskaði, að þér vegni vel í öllum hlutum og að þú sért heill heilsu, eins og sálu þinni vegnar vel.
3 Ég varð mjög glaður, þegar bræður komu og báru vitni um tryggð þína við sannleikann, hversu þú lifir í sannleika.
4 Ég hef enga meiri gleði en þá að heyra, að börnin mín lifi í sannleikanum.
5 Þú breytir dyggilega, minn elskaði, í öllu sem þú vinnur fyrir bræðurna og jafnvel ókunna menn.
6 Þeir hafa vitnað fyrir söfnuðinum um kærleika þinn. Þú gjörir vel, er þú greiðir för þeirra eins og verðugt er fyrir Guði.
7 Því að sakir nafnsins lögðu þeir af stað og þiggja ekki neitt af heiðnum mönnum.
8 Þess vegna ber oss að taka þvílíka menn að oss, til þess að vér verðum samverkamenn sannleikans.
9 Ég hef ritað nokkuð til safnaðarins, en Díótrefes, sem vill vera fremstur meðal þeirra, tekur eigi við oss.
10 Þess vegna ætla ég, ef ég kem, að minna á verk þau er hann vinnur. Hann lætur sér ekki nægja að ófrægja oss með vondum orðum, heldur tekur hann ekki sjálfur á móti bræðrunum og hindrar þá, er það vilja gjöra, og rekur þá úr söfnuðinum.
11 Breyttu ekki eftir því, sem illt er, minn elskaði, heldur eftir því, sem gott er. Sá sem gott gjörir heyrir Guði til, en sá sem illt gjörir hefur ekki séð Guð.
12 Demetríusi er borið gott vitni af öllum og af sannleikanum sjálfum. Það gjörum vér líka, og þú veist að vitnisburður vor er sannur.
13 Ég hef margt að rita þér, en vil ekki rita þér með bleki og penna.
14 En ég vona að sjá þig bráðum og munum við þá talast við munnlega.

1 The elder,(A)
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) 6 They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)
11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)
13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(T)

1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
