  172. and the priests slaughtered them and made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, to make atonement for all Israel. For the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.
  173. They took their accustomed posts according to the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests threw the blood that they received from the hand of the Levites.
  174. And they slaughtered the Passover lamb, and the priests threw the blood that they received from them while the Levites flayed the sacrifices.
  175. “O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry find no resting place.
  176. His young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he.”
  177. You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
  178. For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
  179. The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
  180. Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
  181. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
  182. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
  183. But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.
  184. The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
  185. deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.
  186. that you may strike your feet in their blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.”
  187. From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight.
  188. He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.
  189. They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
  190. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes!
  191. He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die.
  192. they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.
  193. Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me!
  194. If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason;
  195. for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
  196. but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.
  197. haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
  198. The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.
  199. If one is burdened with the blood of another, he will be a fugitive until death; let no one help him.
  200. Bloodthirsty men hate one who is blameless and seek the life of the upright.
  201. For pressing milk produces curds, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife.
  202. “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats.
  203. When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.
  204. when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning.
  205. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!
  206. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
  207. For the waters of Dibon are full of blood; for I will bring upon Dibon even more, a lion for those of Moab who escape, for the remnant of the land.
  208. For behold, the Lord is coming out from his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth will disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain.
  209. He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,
  210. Their slain shall be cast out, and the stench of their corpses shall rise; the mountains shall flow with their blood.
  211. The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood; it is gorged with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
  212. Wild oxen shall fall with them, and young steers with the mighty bulls. Their land shall drink its fill of blood, and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
  213. I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
  214. For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies; your tongue mutters wickedness.
  215. Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.
  216. “He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck; he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers pig's blood; he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol. These have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations;
  217. if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm,
  218. Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents,
  219. Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.
  220. But you have eyes and heart only for your dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence.”
  221. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”
  222. That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord God of hosts holds a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
  223. “Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.
  224. The violence done to me and to my kinsmen be upon Babylon,” let the inhabitant of Zion say. “My blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,” let Jerusalem say.
  225. This was for the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed in the midst of her the blood of the righteous.
  226. They wandered, blind, through the streets; they were so defiled with blood that no one was able to touch their garments.
  227. If I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.
  228. Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand.
  229. I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the Lord; I have spoken.”
  230. “Forge a chain! For the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence.
  231. Then he said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of blood, and the city full of injustice. For they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see.’
  232. “Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it with blood, to cut off from it man and beast,
  233. “And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’
  234. Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil.
  235. And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.
  236. Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them,
  237. And I will judge you as women who commit adultery and shed blood are judged, and bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy.
  238. “If he fathers a son who is violent, a shedder of blood, who does any of these things
  239. lends at interest, and takes profit; shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.
  240. You shall be fuel for the fire. Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. You shall be no more remembered, for I the Lord have spoken.”
  241. Israel's Shedding of Blood

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
  242. “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then declare to her all her abominations.
  243. You shall say, Thus says the Lord God: A city that sheds blood in her midst, so that her time may come, and that makes idols to defile herself!
  244. You have become guilty by the blood that you have shed, and defiled by the idols that you have made, and you have brought your days near, the appointed time of your years has come. Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mockery to all the countries.
  245. “Behold, the princes of Israel in you, every one according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood.
  246. There are men in you who slander to shed blood, and people in you who eat on the mountains; they commit lewdness in your midst.
  247. In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.
  248. “Behold, I strike my hand at the dishonest gain that you have made, and at the blood that has been in your midst.
  249. Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain.
  250. For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. With their idols they have committed adultery, and they have even offered up to them for food the children whom they had borne to me.
  251. But righteous men shall pass judgment on them with the sentence of adulteresses, and with the sentence of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.”
  252. “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice.
  253. For the blood she has shed is in her midst; she put it on the bare rock; she did not pour it out on the ground to cover it with dust.
  254. To rouse my wrath, to take vengeance, I have set on the bare rock the blood she has shed, that it may not be covered.
  255. Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.
  256. for I will send pestilence into her, and blood into her streets; and the slain shall fall in her midst, by the sword that is against her on every side. Then they will know that I am the Lord.
  257. I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood, and the ravines will be full of you.
  258. then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
  259. He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.
  260. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.
  261. If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.
  262. Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: You eat flesh with the blood and lift up your eyes to your idols and shed blood; shall you then possess the land?
  263. therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you.
  264. So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols with which they had defiled it.
  265. With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur.
  266. “As for you, son of man, thus says the Lord God: Speak to the birds of every sort and to all beasts of the field: ‘Assemble and come, gather from all around to the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, a great sacrificial feast on the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat flesh and drink blood.
  267. You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—of rams, of lambs, and of he-goats, of bulls, all of them fat beasts of Bashan.
  268. And you shall eat fat till you are filled, and drink blood till you are drunk, at the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you.
  269. And he said to me, “Son of man, thus says the Lord God: These are the ordinances for the altar: On the day when it is erected for offering burnt offerings upon it and for throwing blood against it,
  270. And you shall take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and upon the rim all around. Thus you shall purify the altar and make atonement for it.
  271. in admitting foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, to be in my sanctuary, profaning my temple, when you offer to me my food, the fat and the blood. You have broken my covenant, in addition to all your abominations.
  272. Rules for Levitical Priests

“But the Levitical priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept the charge of my sanctuary when the people of Israel went astray from me, shall come near to me to minister to me. And they shall stand before me to offer me the fat and the blood, declares the Lord God.
  273. The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and the posts of the gate of the inner court.
  274. And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
  275. there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
  276. Gilead is a city of evildoers, tracked with blood.
  277. Ephraim has given bitter provocation; so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.
  278. “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
  279. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
  280. “Egypt shall become a desolation and Edom a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the people of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
  281. I will avenge their blood, blood I have not avenged, for the Lord dwells in Zion.”
  282. Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.”
  283. who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity.
  284. The godly has perished from the earth, and there is no one upright among mankind; they all lie in wait for blood, and each hunts the other with a net.
  285. Woe to Nineveh

Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder— no end to the prey!
  286. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.
  287. “Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity!
  288. The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.
  289. I will bring distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the Lord; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.
  290. I will take away its blood from its mouth, and its abominations from between its teeth; it too shall be a remnant for our God; it shall be like a clan in Judah, and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
  291. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
  292. And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment,
  293. And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
  294. saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
  295. so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
  296. for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
  297. saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
  298. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
  299. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
  300. Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves.”
  301. And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
  302. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
  303. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
  304. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
  305. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.
  306. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
  307. so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,
  308. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.
  309. Repent or Perish

There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
  310. And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
  311. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
  312. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
  313. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
  314. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
  315. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
  316. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
  317. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
  318. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
  319. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
  320. the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
  321. saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”
  322. but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood.
  323. that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”
  324. And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
  325. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all,
  326. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
  327. But as for the Gentiles who have believed, we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
  328. And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I myself was standing by and approving and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’
  329. “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
  330. whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
  331. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
  332. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
  333. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
  334. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
  335. Mystery and Victory

I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
  336. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
  337. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
  338. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
  339. and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
  340. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
  341. but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.
  342. Redemption Through the Blood of Christ

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)
  343. he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
  344. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,
  345. how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
  346. Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
  347. For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
  348. saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.”
  349. And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.
  350. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
  351. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own,
  352. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
  353. The Full Assurance of Faith

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
  354. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?
  355. By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
  356. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
  357. and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
  358. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp.
  359. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.
  360. Benediction

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,
  361. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
  362. but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
  363. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
  364. Testimony Concerning the Son of God

This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
  365. the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
  366. and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood
  367. And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
  368. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
